Sutton Community Transport

PRESS RELEASE

Dear All,

We are writing to inform all interested parties that
Sutton Community Transport Charity (“SCT”) is closing.  SCT has operated in the London Borough of Sutton since 1998, and over the years has provided a large amount of social value to Sutton.  This year alone, our social value is in the region of £90,000.

The last effective date of operation will be 28 March 2024.

SCT does not receive grant funding to support its work or underpin its costs.  As a result, the charity has looked to provide transport contracts to underpin these costs.  Having survived the Covid Pandemic, the funding climate has become increasingly challenging, with the burden of our costs increasing in the region of 30% in the last two years.

As you will have seen in the media, many councils face tight budget constraints.  This has led to many focussing on competitive bidding, with many local authorities awarding a service purely based on price, or giving pricing the heaviest weighting, when selecting suppliers.  This approach has been a significant contributing factor when considering the closure of SCT.

SCT has always looked to provide quality, real local jobs for our staff members, while aiming to provide a gold-level service to our clients.  We have also resisted going down the self-employed or zero hours contracts route with our staff. As a result of this ethos, SCT could not provide a service at taxi pricing.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the SCT staff for their hard work in the last few difficult weeks of operation.  We would also like to wish all our home-to-school and other clients well for their future.
